There are two dirt traps on the bottom of the sweeper for when you push forward or pull back while sweeping. You press a cover on the bottom to open the trap. You have to empty both sides.

Yes very easy. Remember though this is a carpet sweeper, not a vacuum. Dies a good job when there are small pick-ups
6. Does this sweeper do well with threads and strings, like from a sewing room?
Use a seam splitter to slice the length of the brushes and pull the hair and threads out easily. They’re only a couple of dollars at any sewing dept. They used to come with these kinds of sweepers.
